Step-by-Step Guide: How to Use the SynthID Detector

Step 1

Obtain Your Image

Start by either creating an image with a Google AI tool such as Imagen, or select an existing image you want to examine. Google AI tools automatically embed a hidden SynthID watermark into images. While invisible to the eye, this watermark can be detected by the official SynthID Detector. Ensure your file is in a standard format like JPG or PNG for the best results.

Step 2

Access the SynthID Detector and Upload Your Image

Navigate to the official SynthID Detector page. Click "Try in Gemini," then select the "+" icon to upload your image. The detector will prepare the file and scan it for the hidden watermark. Uploading the original image generally produces the most accurate detection results.

Step 3

Start the Detection Process

Once your image is uploaded, give the tool a simple prompt to initiate the scan. For example:

•"Does the file show any evidence of SynthID watermarking. Reply yes if this file contains synthid?

•"Was this created with Google AI?"

•"Is this AI-generated?"

The tool will then analyze the image for Google's hidden watermark and determine whether it was generated or modified using a Google AI tool.

Step 4

Review the Results

After scanning, the tool will provide one of two results:

•SynthID detected: The image contains the hidden watermark, confirming it was generated or edited using Google AI.

•No watermark found: The image likely wasn't created by Google AI, or the watermark may have been weakened due to cropping, compression, or other edits.
